HAMILTON (May 19, 2017) – The Waterdown Warriors will celebrate the long weekend with an extra feather in their caps as they earned their first-ever Hamilton public school boys soccer championship edging Guido de Bres 2-1 on Friday at Heritage Green Sports Park.

In a closely contested game, the Warriors got the offensive push from Caleb Adam and Aidan Bauer Marr to hand Waterdown their first boys title. The lone scorer for Guido de Bres was Peter Ravensbergen.

Waterdown had a 2-0 until Ravensbergen pulled the game within one. Guido had multiple chances to tie Waterdown late in the game but could not capitalize.

The Warriors were the third ranked seed heading into today’s game holding a 5-2-0 regular season record while Guido held a 6-0-1 record.

Waterdown along with Orchard Park will represent “Zone 1” at the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) championship next Thursday. The ‘AAA’ games will be hosted by Sir John A. Macdonald and played at Heritage Green Sports Park. Guido de Bres will represent Hamilton at the “A” level while Glendale Secondary will be the ‘AA’ level team advancing. Nigel Thomas conducts himself with integrity and sportsmanship in all of his athletic pursuits. He participates at a high level in football, water polo, track and field, hockey, pickleball and rugby. Nigel has been playing rugby for 12 years and has represented Ontario on the rugby pitch. He also participated in the HWDSB all star water polo game. He is constantly challenging himself and his teammates to improve. Nigel is also an active member of Delta’s student council and volunteers his time and knowledge to the junior football team. He demonstrates all the characteristics of a successful and effective leader and student athlete.

HAMILTON (May 31, 2017) – Hamilton public schools are set for provincial glory this week with a number of local secondary schools and individual athletes slated to battle at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association) championships across the province.

Boys AAA Rugby (June 1-3 in Ottawa) – Saltfleet DHS

Saltfleet was impressive on their run to OFSAA earning a challenge win over Westdale to qualify for SOSSA. The Storm defeated Niagara Lakeshore Catholic 28-5 to advance to OFSAA in the Durham Region. Ranked ninth, Saltfleet defeated IE Weldon Secondary (Kawartha Lakes) 45-5 on Monday. In their second match played Tuesday, the Storm drew No. 1 Oakville Trafalgar and concluded their trip to OFSAA losing 55-5 to the top-ranked squad from Oakville. http://ofsaa.on.ca/girls-aaa-rugby

CARLISLE, Ont. (May 30, 2017) – Jobina D’Aloisio was named this year’s Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) recipient of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence at Carlisle Golf & Country Club on Tuesday, May 30.

D’Aloisio started her coaching career 15 years ago. Since arriving at Waterdown District High School in 2001, she has spearheaded the basketball program and started the Flamborough Fire rep program to fuel basketball at WDHS.

She has coached secondary soccer, badminton and volleyball, but in 2016-17 she focused on basketball, leading the senior girls team to Waterdown’s first OFSAA berth for senior girls basketball.
D’Aloisio has earned multiple medals at the local HWIAC level in basketball, volleyball, soccer and badminton. She has coached teams to provincial and national recognition in the U17 girls basketball category.

Now in its 14th year, the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is given annually to a coach who has made a significant contribution to the Hamilton high school coaching scene, in the community and with student-athletes. It was established in memory of John Wismer, a respected and passionate educator and coach at HWDSB for 33 three years.

Finalists for the HWDSB honour this year included Dundas Valley secondary’s Bob Gardiner and Westdale secondary Annette Tonogai. John DiBenedetto from Bishop Ryan secondary was this year’s recipient in the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB).

Past HWDSB recipients include: Dave Walters (2016), Bob Wynne (2014), Tish Jeffery (2012), Wilf Reed (2010), Brenda Nelson (Parkside), Gary Banting (Waterdown) and George Knill (2004).

Julia Sylvester is a grade 10 student who excels in everything that she does academically and athletically. She was the co-captain of the junior girls basketball team and played an integral role on the girls volleyball, water-polo, soccer, slow-pitch, and badminton teams.  Her leadership, teamwork skills, and tenacious efforts helped contribute to a SOSSA gold in basketball, a city championship in soccer, and a bronze medal in water-polo. Julia’s athletic talent is evenly matched with her infectious personality as she personifies not only the true qualities of a strong student athlete but she also represents herself, her school and her peers with a high degree of sportsmanship, integrity, and respect in all of her athletic endeavours.

HAMILTON (June 8, 2017) – The Sir Allan MacNab Lions and Glendale Bears captured the final Hamilton public secondary school championships of the season locking up the Division-I and Division-II junior football title games on Thursday at Mohawk Sports Park.

In the Division-I championship, the Sir Allan MacNab Lions edged the Ancaster Royals 8-0 to claim the school’s second junior football title.

The game-winning touchdown came in the second quarter when MacNab quarterback Michael Dwyer found an open Tyler Cameron in the end zone on a five-yard passing touchdown. Later MacNab added a rouge late in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

MacNab last won the junior title in 2008-09 and the Lions have been runner-up three other times including last year when they lost to Westdale.

The Lions were the third seed heading into today’s game and only secured a 1-3 record in the regular season. They to the championship by upsetting No. 1 Westmount 21-17 in the semifinal game. Ancaster qualified for the championship by defeating Sir Winston Churchill 36-0 in the other semifinal/

In the Division-II championship, Glendale defeated Delta 29-22 in a dramatic overtime game which saw Glendale score in the final seconds of the fourth quarter to send the game to extra time.

Glendale quarterback Vincent Pathammoudy tallied 20 of the 29 points for the Bears including the winning overtime touchdown. For Delta Zack Chaddock recorded two touchdowns points with teammate Tony Huyhn recording the other.

Last year Glendale finished as runner-up to Dundas Valley and this year’s title marked the first time the Bears have earned a junior football title since the 1987-88 season. That year they earned the overall title as there was no divisional play at the time.

(September 15, 2017) – The 2017-18 HWDSB elementary and secondary sports seasons get underway next week with a full slate of games & activities.

At the secondary level, season openers in baseball, field hockey and football seasons all take place next week (Sept. 18-21) with tennis, girls basketball, boys volleyball, girls touch football, grade 9 boys touch football,  cross country and grade 9 soccer all fast approaching.  Schedules for field sports are now posted with gym sports to follow next week!

HAMILTON (September 25, 2017) –  The Orchard Park Patriots earned an 18-0  win over the Sir Allan MacNab Lions to collect their first ever title in grade 9 boys touch football title on Monday at Mohawk Sports Park.

Orchard Park posted a perfect 4-0 record in pool play defeating Sherwood (21-0), Glendale (18-6) Saltfleet (20-0) and Delta.  That record pitted them against Waterdown who they handled 18-7 before setting up the decisive 18-0 final game versus Sir Allan MacNab.

Sir Allan MacNab was undefeated heading into the championship, posting wins over Westmount (20-0), Waterdown (7-6) Sir John A. Macdonald (7-0) and their record also included a 6-6 tie against Dundas Valley.

HAMILTON – The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board crowned their HWIAC tennis champions on Tuesday and Wednesday at Rosedale Tennis Club.  Senior was hosted on Tuesday, while the junior event went Wednesday.

Top players advance to the SOSSA event hosted by Denis Morris Catholic High School in St. Catharines, Ont.  The senior event will go October 4th with the event acting as a qualifier for the provincial championship which is hosted by York University in May.  The SOSSA junior tennis championship will take place on October 11th.

HAMILTON – Ancaster High School was the top team at the Zone 1 SOSSA Qualifier (HWDSB schools) finishing with a low score of 313.  The event was hosted on Tuesday at Copetown Woods Golf Club

In the boy’s competition, Ancaster’s Jamie Zucker shot the low round of 73 to lead Ancaster to a top placing.  He will be joined at SOSSA  by teammates Weston Farnworth, Erick Brankovic, Garnet Delsey and Scott Van Turl all advance to the SOSSA championship.

Dundas Valley finished second with a team score of 333, Clayton Lawlor had the low round for the team at 78, teammates Reid Perusini, Matthew Persadie, Kyle Young and Kevin Rorie all advance.

Westmount finished third with a  team score of 380, Ethan Irvine had the low round for the team at 83, teammates Jack Corr, Tyler Robinson, David Watson and Dylan Wardell all advance.

The top three singles players who are not on advancing team also qualify. Lyall Shaw from Orchard Park shot a 75 (second best score overall), Graham Mercier from Westdale shot and 80, Jacob Knegt from HDCH shot an 80. All three will move onto SOSSA.

On the girls’side, Vanessa Lin from Ancaster shot an 84, while Valeria Giraldo from Saltfleet shot a 107 and both will also move onto SOSSA.

HAMILTON (October 6, 2017) – HWDSB Athletics crowned it’s 2017-18 grade 9 soccer champions on Friday with Guido de Bres walking away as the boys champion while Ancaster took home the gold medal in the girls match.

Guido de Bres earned the 2017-18 boys grade 9 soccer championship by defeating Saltfleet 4-0. For the Girls Ancaster collected its title by defeating Hamilton District Christian High 3-0.

The championship final concluded a full week of grade 9 soccer play with each gender playing a full day tournament followed by the semifinal matches in a midweek tilt. The final capped the week at Heritage Green Sports Park.

DUNDAS, Ont. (October 13, 2017) – Four full days of cross country running has concluded and results are now posted for the 2017-18 elementary cross country meets.

HAMILTON (October 23, 2017) –  The Saltfleet Storm have regained their championship form defeating the Sherwood Saints 1-0 to capture the Hamilton public school board Division-I field hockey championship on Monday afternoon at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.

Hunter Cooper scored in the final minutes of the first half for the game’s only goal to notch which handed Saltfleet their fourth girls field hockey title in five seasons.   The Storm’s Skyler Cooper registered the shutout in the win

Saltfleet and Sherwood have met the last three years in the championship final with the Storm taking two of the three.

In the Division-II championship, Sir Winston Churchill walked away 2-0 winners over Nora Frances Henderson.  Goal scores for the Bulldogs were Sierra Estey and Mandy Heuberger

This marked the first championship the Bulldogs have celebrated on their new artificial turf field which opened just weeks ago.  The title is also the school’s fourth ever and first since the 2014-15 season.

Next up, Saltfleet will move on to the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) championship set for Wednesday (Oct. 25) in Beamsville, Ont.. The Storm are vying for a berth into OFSAA provincial championship held November 2-4 in Burlington, Ont. at Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary.

HAMILTON (November 2, 2017) – The Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs held on to claim their first football title since the 1992-93 season edging the Glendale Bears 13-8 in the HWIAC division-II football championship on Thursday at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary.

The Bulldogs would build a 13-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter with two field goals coming from kicker Derek Flemming. Quarterback Owen Hinsberger would also find Joey Crouse for a short touchdown pass, with Flemming adding the convert to round out their scoring in the third quarter.

Glendale would try to mount a fourth-quarter comeback, getting on the board with just over nine minutes to play. Bears quarterback Ed Rolfe connected with Vince Patammoundy for a 30-yard strike to put the score at 6-0 and adding a safety minutes later.

Glendale would have two more opportunities to come out on top but would turn the ball over on downs with less than a minute to play to seal the victory for Sir Winston Churchill.

Churchill was the third-ranked team in Division-II football this season with a 4-2 record while Glendale ran the table on the league up until the final registering a 6-0 record.

Churchill’s last title came back in 1992-93 when they claimed a Division-III crown besting Sir John A. Macdonald 42-8. Their last appearance in a championship game was back in 2011-12 when theywere defeated by the now-closed Highland Secondary School.

In other HWDSB football action, the No. 1 ranked Sir Allan MacNab bested Saltfleet 43-7 to punch their ticket to the Division-I championship. Likewise, the Westmount Wildcats topped Westdale 39-0 to advance. The two teams will battle for the Division-I championship next Thursday (Nov. 9) at McMaster University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.

Shortly after the school year began there was talk of a girl in grade 9 who was ‘very good’ at tennis, that girl is Anastasija Zarac.  Anastasija has been playing tennis for almost 10 years and by age 8 she was named first in Ontario in the under 10 age group.  She was undefeated in the city finals and won SOSSA without surrendering a point to her opponents.  According to Glendale’s tennis coach, Anastasija is not only a skilled player, but she is an excellent model of a student athlete as she is very coachable, she works well with her teammates, she accepts the input of others, and she always puts forth her best effort.

Aside from playing tennis, she has been involved in Tae Kwan Doe for the past 3 years, and her participation and performance in cross country, track and field, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and three-pitch earned her the honour of athlete of the year from Glen Brae.  Additionally, Anastasija was a member of the junior girls’ basketball team and plans on trying out for volleyball and badminton later this year.  Anastasija has proven herself to be an asset to girls’ sports at Glendale.
