DUNDAS, Ont. (October 17. 2018) Dundas Valley made a clean sweep of the overall team awards at the 2018 HWIAC Cross Country Championship on Wednesday at Christie Lake Conservation Area

HAMILTON (October 18, 2018) – Saltfleet Storm repeated as HWIAC Girls Field Hockey Champions on Thursday downing the Westdale Warriors 6-1 at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School Field.

Mallory Mackesy potted a hatrick to lead the Storm to its fourth title in five years. Also scoring for Saltfleet were Nasya Palmer, Nicole McDonald and Rachel Rioux.

For the Warriors, Julia Stavnitzky opened the scoring at the sixth minute of the match.

The two schools are not done with each other as Saltfleet and Westdale will meet in the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) semifinal set for Wednesday (Oct. 24) morning at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School facing off at 9:00 am. That winner will advance to the SOSSA Championship at 2:00pm. Both teams are vying for a berth into OFSAA provincial championship held November 1-3 in Burlington, Ont.

In the Division-II championship, Westmount earned a 2-1 victory in overtime besting Sir Winston Churchill on their home field. Jillian O’Connell netted the game winner in the third minute of overtime. Clare Johnston had the other goal for Westmount.

ANCASTER, Ont. (October 19, 2018) – The Ancaster Royals put an exclamation mark on their 2018-19 baseball season cruising to a 15-1 win over the Westmount Wildcats in the HWIAC Championship on Friday at Ancaster Community Park.

The Royals juggernaut offence was powered on Friday by Matt Sargeant and Colin Muir. Both players went three for four at the plate. Sargeant scored four runs and knocked in two RBI’s while Muir scored three times and had three RBI’s. Tyler Wilson was also a top contributor, scoring a run and batting in two more.

Ancaster starter Shane Jeffrey was solid in his three innings of work striking out five Westmount batters and allowing no hits.

Westmount showed life in the fourth inning when Dylan Wardell scored on a Sawyer Smith RBI double. That would be all that the Wildcats would get as the Royals shut the door.

The Royals finished with a perfect 8-0 record, earning six wins in the regular season and then posting a 8-2 semifinal win over the Sherwood Saints before exploding in the final against Westmount.

Ancaster was unchallenged all season long winning five of their six regular season games by 10 runs or more. The only team that kept it close against the Royals was the Waterdown Warriors who held Ancaster’s offence to just two runs in their game back on October 4. Defensively, Ancaster was just as sharp, allowing nine runs during their entire campaign.

This is the first title for the Royals since the 2015-16 season after finishing runner up the previous two seasons. They avenged their 2016-17 championship loss against Westmount which was a 1-0 extra inning heartbreaker.

Overall the Royals have claimed five HWIAC baseball titles appearing in 10 of the last 12 championships. They are the winningest program with Waterdown the next closest team with three titles.

In the Spring, Ancaster will represent the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (Zone 1) at the SOSSA championship. The event is tentatively set for May 30th and will be hosted by St. Michael’s CHS in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Summer Millben is a grade 12 student who is involved in every aspect of life at Delta. She is a committed athlete who rallied to put a senior girls basketball team together this year when it looked like the team wouldn’t run. As the team heads into the second half of their season, Summer is excited to lead them to the playoffs in Division-2.

Through her leadership and commitment she has been an integral part of many teams and intends on playing volleyball, pickleball, orienteering, badminton,ultimate and track and field this year on top of touch football and basketball…all the while maintaining a part-time job and playing club basketball outside of school! She is a member of the GAC and is always on board to run all the events that make Delta an amazing place to be! She is hoping to go to Mohawk next year in the Criminal Justice program. Summer is the definition of a well-rounded student athlete who is a fierce competitor and a natural leader.

As Delta is closing at the end of this year, we know you’ll uphold the honour of being Delta’s final Featured Female Athlete of the Year! Congratulations Summer! Keep making Delta proud!

Nathan Steeves was an easy choice for this award. Nathan just capped off another tremendous season for the Varsity Football Bears. Playing on both sides of the ball with skill and determination, Nathan was a difference-maker in every game this fall. Coach Cheeseman and many others around the building consistently describe him as a natural leader, hard-worker, role model and a ‘coach’s dream’. Self-disciplined, motivated and always looking for new ways to improve, Nathan is the epitome of the ‘student-athlete’. Congratulations and well-deserved!

Hamilton, ON – November 2, 2018: More than 1,700 of the best high school cross country runners from across the province will converge on Christie Lake Conservation Area on Saturday, aiming to make a name for themselves at the 2018 OFSAA Cross Country Championship hosted by Dundas Valley Secondary School.

The event features seven races and showcases several decorated student-athletes, including several past champions. Among them is Aurora’s Cameron Ormond (Aurora HS), who is aiming for her fourth straight OFSAA title. Ormond won the girls Grade 9 title in 2015 and followed that performance by collecting the junior title in 2016. Last year, she was the top runner in the senior girls race and has her eyes set on a second straight senior title.

Ottawa’s Joe Fast (Ridgemount HS) also returns and is looking for his third straight OFSAA cross country title, having collected the individual Grade 9 title in 2016 and then claimed the junior race last year in 2018. Other returning champions from previous years include EJ Boston (Maximilian Kolbe HS – Aurora), Roman Mironov (Father John Redmond CSS – Toronto), Haily Davis (JF Ross CVI – Guelph) and Nick Mota (Newmarket HS – Newmarket).

Last year’s team champions include Vincent Massey Secondary School (Windsor), which won the boys title along with Leaside High School (Toronto), which picked up the overall girls championship title.

Local runners to watch are Quincy Rotsaert-Smith (Dundas Valley SS) in the midget girls event while Cooper Norton (Orchard Park SS) will contest the midget boys race. In the junior events, Anna Grabowski (Waterdown DHS), will be one to watch in the junior girls race, with Lachlan Perigord of St. Mary’s CSS competing on the boys side. In the prestigious senior events, Sarah Cushnie (Westdale) will look for a top placement while Ethan Summer-Hays (Hamilton DCH) will look for a top finish in the boys race.

Among HWDSB schools, Dundas Valley secondary (midget girls) and Westdale secondary (senior girls) have a good chance to place in the team events with a home course advantage.

This weekend’s championship follows pre-OFSAA event Dundas Valley hosted on October 3. Top runners from that event were midget girls: Alysia Maurice (Humberview SS – Caledon); midget boys: Health McAllister (London Central – London); junior girls: Emily Bryce (Saugeen District SS – Port Elgin); junior boys: Eric Campbell (Sir Winston Churchill SS – Niagara Falls); senior girls: Abbey Yuhasz (Resurrection CSS – Kitchener, Ont.); senior boys: Foster Mallecck (St. Mary’s HS – Kitchener, Ont.); para-girls: Kealyn Cherwaiko (Georgetown HS – Georgetown) and para-boys: Owen Konkle.

Hamilton has experienced significant rainfall in recent days, so the course will be wet. However, Meet Director Michael Smith of Dundas Valley Secondary School says that Christie Lake Conservation Area and the volunteer crew is ready.

“The rain definitely made for a wet setup on Thursday, but the show will go on,” Smith said. “The course and cross country in general tends to favour the wet and the mud. Rain is scheduled to taper off and Saturday is predicted as sunny and cool. We’re very excited to see the province’s best runners compete on our course. I’m sure we’ll see some great performances come Saturday.”

The OFSAA cross country championships are the Ontario high school cross country championship held annually in varying locations around the province. The event is usually held on the first Saturday of November with more than 1,600 student-athletes competing in six races. It is one of the largest sports events offered by OFSAA, along with Track & Field.

– Local organizer Mike Smith earns OFSAA leadership award –

DUNDAS, Ont. (November 3, 2018) – Glebe Collegiate and St. Michael’s College claimed  the overall girls and boys  titles respectively on Saturday as the 2018 OFSAA Cross Country Championship wrapped at Christie Lake Conservation Area. Dundas Valley Secondary School from the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) and Burlington Central of the Halton District School Board (HDSB) were the host schools for this year’s event.

Aurora’s Cameron Ormond captured her fourth straight OFSAA gold medal running to a time of twenty-three minutes and 1.7 seconds in the senior girls race. She is just the second women in history to secure four OFSAA cross country titles. Kathy Butler won four OFSAA and went on to represent Canada in distance events at the Olympics in 1996 and 2004. Ormond won the grade-nine title in 2015 and followed her rookie performance by collecting the junior title in 2016. She now has back-to-back senior titles to go along with the one she earned last season.

Ormond was just ahead of Sam Ford (University of Toronto Schools- Toronto) who finished 12 seconds with a time of 23:13.5. She was followed by Olivia Roussel (Humberside CI – Toronto) at 23:18.8

In the senior boys event, London’s Evan Burke (London South CI) finished the six kilometre race with a time of 19:06.8. Nick Mota of Newmarket (Newmarket HS) was second at 19:21.9 with Wellenad’s Santiago Gaitan-Caballer finishing third at 19:51.8.

The top local finisher was Bishop Ryan’s Ryan Sorley who took home sixth place in the boys para-race with a time of 13:34.2.

Quincy Rotsertsmith from Dundas Valley broke into the top-30 in the midget girls event to help host school Dundas Valley to an 11th place finish in the team standings. Rotsaert-Smith raced to a time of 17:06.7 on her home course to finish 24th.

Stoney Creek’s Cooper Norton (Orchard Park) also had top 30 finish placing 26th in the midget boys event with a time of 15:22.00.

Other finishers from the host Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board claiming a top 100 included: David Rule (Westmount): junior boys – 53rd; Sarah Cushnie (Westdale) sr girls 76th; Hana Robertson (Westdale) midget girls – 89th; Emma Due (Dundas Valley) midget girls – 94th and Tristan Richards (Dundas Valley) senior boys – 96th.

In the team competition, the HWDSB had seven teams competing with the Midget Girls from Dundas Valley having the day’s best performance with an 11th place finish in their race.  The junior girls of Dundas Valley were 23rd, While the Westdale senior teams were both 24th.  Dundas Valley had three other teams competing both senior groups and midget boys.

Meet Director, Mike Smith from Dundas Valley was honoured before the race earning the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award. This award is presented annually at each OFSAA championship to a teacher-coach who has made a significant contribution to the educational athletic program. The recipient of this award exemplifies the values of fair play and good sportsmanship, while promoting enjoyment, personal growth and educational achievement through school sport.

In Smith’s case this is certainly a earned award as he has continually has one of the top cross country teams within the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board over his 21-year coaching career. His athletes of won eight  team OFSAA cross country and track medals.  He is also influential in running several local meets and has assisted in operating regional SOSSA cross country and track & field events.

Over 1700 athletes were in attendance at Saturday’s event racing in 12 events. Next year’s event is set to be hosted by Sudbury.

A recap of HWDSB/HWIAC teams competing for provincial championships at OFSAA held across the Ontario from November 22-24, 2018.

HAMILTON (November 25, 2018) – The Westdale Warriors and the Dundas Valley Gryphons returned to Hamilton after earning medals at the OFSAA Girls Basketball Championship hosted in London, Ont., over the weekend.

Westdale struck gold in the girls AAA basketball championship topping Hamilton Catholic’s Cardinal Newman 49-46.  The win marked the second time the Warriors have earned the title in school history with the last one coming 21 years ago in 1997.

Dundas Valley earned a silver medal for their effort in the Girls AA basketball.  They rolled through the event only to be stopped by Wallaceburg DSS (Chatham, Ont.) in the championship game losing by a point 54-53. It is the Gryphon’s first OFSAA medal since it became a school in 2014.

Not to be outdone, Hamilton District Christian, a member of the Hamilton-Wentworth Interscholastic Athletic Council (HWIAC) scored a bronze medal at the OFSAA Boys A Volleyball Championship hosted in Belleville, Ont.

The Warriors trailed Cardinal Newman 25-22 heading into the half, but took the lead in the third by holding its cross-town opponent to just four points while Westdale would post 12 to take a 34-20 advantage. That run would loom large with the two teams separated by just three to end the game.

Westdale’s Heidi Nelson poured in a game high 17 points in the final to lead the Warriors while Amy Stinson had 12.  

On Thursday, Westdale opened their championship run with two convincing wins with the first coming on a 68-38 dusting over St. Edmund Campion (Brampton, Ont.) followed by a 75-35 victory over Weldon (Lindsay, Ont.).

Friday’s action saw the Warriors beat Northern (Sarnia, Ont.) 49-24 in the quarterfinals before topping J. Clark Richardson (Ajax, Ont.)  69-50 in the semifinals to set up an all Hamilton final.

The Dundas Valley Gryphons put on quite a show at the girls AA basketball championship coming within a point of claiming the provincial crown and walking away as silver medalists.

Dundas Valley rolled through opponents all tournament long posting early round victories against Prince Edward (Picton, Ont.) 57-16 and St. Joseph (Barrie, Ont.) 56-37.  They continued their strong play on Friday, disposing of Bishop MacDonell (Guelph, Ont.) 58-43 in the quarterfinals. In their semifinal match, they overpowered cross-town opponent St. Mary’s (Hamilton) 63-38.

The championship final against Wallaceburg was a nail bitter with the two teams staying within a few points the entire game.  Dundas Valley led 15-14 after the first quarter, but trailed at the half (29-25) and heading into the final frame (36-34).

In the final moments of the contest, Dundas Valley had two opportunities to convert the lead, but a buzzer beater rolled off the rim to finish one point behind at 54-53 and claim the silver medal.

Megan Spenier was named the championship game’s Pride, Hustle, Determination Award for Dundas Valley.

The Gryphons can hold their head up high putting together a remarkable season and can lay claim to the HWIAC city championship crown topping Westdale as well as the AA SOSSA title.

Volleyball – Boys (A): Hamilton DCH (November 22-24 @ Belleville, Ont.)

Hamilton District Christian High ended their boys volleyball season with a provincial bronze medal winning 3-1 over Mere-Theresa (Hamilton).

The Knights qualified for the final with a 3-1 pool play record, earning victories over Toronto Christian (Toronto), Nouvelle Alliance (Barrie, Ont.) and St. Michael’s Choir (Toronto).  Their only blemish came against St. Thomas Aquinas (Kendra, Ont.)

In the quarterfinals, HDCH beat St. Mary’s 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-18).  The semifinals saw the Knights lose 3-1 to Louis Riel (Ottawa) on set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, and 25-19.

The Ancaster Royals headed into OFSAA having earned the HWIAC city championship and earned a second entry to represent SOSSA at the provincial championship.

HAMILTON (December 5, 2018) – The top girls’ high school basketball players within in the Hamilton public school board will take centre stage on Thursday night as it hosts the third annual HWDSB Girls Basketball All-Star Classic game.

Tipoff for the event is at 7:00pm at Glendale Secondary School with the game featuring 30 of the best senior girls basketball players within the HWIAC league.

As part of the game, the school board along with McMaster University and Mohawk College, have once again teamed up to help deliver this year’s event. Both McMaster and Mohawk will have student-athletes from their varsity program act as “Head Coaches” for the two teams.

Team Mohawk will be coached current Mohawk women’s basketball players: Sam Pocrnic, Emilee Champigny, Hannah Zinkewich and Kassandra Willard.  Champigny is in her second year with the Mountaineers and is a HWDSB alumni having graduated from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. Pocrnic is in her third year with Mohawk, while Zinkewich and Willard are both rookies with the Mountaineers.

For Team McMaster they will be led by Erin Burns and Christina Buttenhan who are both from the Hamilton area. Burns is also in her fifth year of eligibility at McMaster and the guard has appeared in 10 games with the Marauders averaging 5.5 points per game. Buttenhan is in her fourth year of eligibility and is currently averaging nine points per game.

Saltfleet’s Quinn Hardy was the game’s top scorer with 13 points to lead Team Mohawk while Amy Stinson of Westdale and Brittany O’Rourke of Sir Winston Churchill each chipped in nine points for the winning group.

For the McMaster side, Isabella Bourgeois of Sherwood and Taylor Marof of Westdale posted eight points each. Claire Sutherland of Westdale had six points in the loss.

Team McMaster held a small three point lead after the first quarter of play (16-13), but the Team Mohawk squad was able to take earn the advantage at the half going up 28-27 and clung to a 43-39 lead heading into the final frame. They were able to separate themselves in the fourth to finish 58-49.

Amy Stinson from Westdale claimed player of the game honours for Team Mohawk while Amber Hewitt earned the same award for Team McMaster. This is the second time in as many years Stinson has earned player of the game honours in the All-Star game format having represented Team McMaster last year.

Prior to the game a three point shooting contest was held with Saltfleet’s Sofia Djurcic taking the crown dropping 10 three pointers.

The game featured 30 of the cities top student athlete basketball players from the Hamilton public school board. It also was the second year the event was staged celebrating & highlighting girls basketball in Hamilton.

This year’s game was the third installment of the which saw the school board team up with Mohawk College and McMaster University in helping present the game. Both post-secondary institutions provided varsity student-athletes to help coach the games with their head coaches on hand to present awards post game.

Keiara Raitt is an extremely versatile athlete who excels on the ice, field, court, diamond, and in the classroom. During her time at Ancaster she has played on the basketball, indoor rowing, touch football, volleyball, Varsity hockey, Varsity soccer, and baseball teams. All her coaches and teammates would agree that she is a team player who is positive, coachable, and demonstrates leadership during a game. She is a true student athlete who is constantly pushing herself to improve both athletically and academically. Keiara spends her weekends travelling for hockey and still maintains excellent grades. In her spare time she is an active member of our athletic council. We look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in the next two years as a Royal.

Noah has all the qualities you want in a student athlete and his contribution to the Saltfleet Athletics program over the past 4 years has been immense. He has played on the Rugby team since grade 9 and has helped the team win city championships, SOSSA championships leading to an OFSAA birth last year. He is a four year member of the hockey team helping his team win a city championship during that time. For the past two years, Noah has been an integral part of the football team helping them make the city semi-finals both of those years. In the mild weather, you’ll find Noah on the fairways and greens of the local courses as a member of our golf team.  Noah’s contribution on the field is only exceeded by his success off the field. He is a person of character and integrity.  He leads by example, he never misses practice and achieves an incredibly high level of success in the classroom. Noah has been described by his coaches as “Wise beyond his years”.  In everything he does, Noah makes those around him better. Noah will be a huge part of this years Hockey and Rugby teams and we know he will achieve incredible things when he leaves Saltfleet and moves on to post-secondary education. Well done Noah.

Anthony Beijes has been a pleasure to teach and coach at Guido de Bres CHS. Although Anthony played very little volleyball prior to high school, he has developed into a dominant player on the court. With a height of 6’4” and fantastic hops (which has served him well in high jump for 3 years here at Guido de Bres) he certainly stands out.  Anthony was given the opportunity to be captain of the senior boys volleyball team and through this was able to help others with less experience in the sport.  He is a very positive team leader and was able to bring out the best in his teammates. Anthony had this to say about his experience playing sports at Guido, “Representing Guido de Bres as an athlete has been big for me in how I carry myself on the court and in playing to the best of my ability no matter what the circumstances. I’m grateful for the opportunity to play a sport that I love and for the talents given to me and strive to use these talents.”  Anthony is looking forward to continuing his education and plans to get a degree in Criminology and eventually his masters in that program.

HAMILTON (January 17, 2019) – The Westdale Warriors captured both sides of the 2018-19 Boys Water Polo Championship earning the senior title over Dundas Valley 4-2. In the junior championship they nipped Orchard Park 3-2 in overtime.

Westdale’s Alexander Nevills scored twice in the senior game with Ethan Celland and Tegan Gray notching a single goal a each.

Dundas Valley started with a 2-0 lead powered by James Crowe’s two goals, however that was all the scoring the Gryphons would earn. Westdale responded with four unanswered goals over the course of the final three frames to take the win.

In the bronze medal senior game the Westmount Wildcats edge the Ancaster Royals 4-3. Westmounts’ Nicholas Boecker tallied two goals to hand Westmount the bronze medal. Nathan Fan and Marcos Urbina netted the other two Westmount goals.

Ancaster’s Hassan Zein Al-Abdin Maan had two goals in the loss while teammate Weston Farnworth added the other.

In the junior championship the No. 2 seeded Westdale Warriors earned their fourth straight title winning 3-2 in an overtime thriller over the top seeded Orchard Park.

Hugh McLelland scored the game winner for the Warriors while Delsen Pooni and Teague Truman scored in regulation for Westdale. Orchard Park put up a tremendous fight with William Macleod and Cooper Jackson scoring for the Patriots.

The junior boys bronze medal game saw Ancaster defeat Waterdown 6-2. Ancaster used a three goal fourth quarter explosion to secure the third place medal.

Ancaster’s Ethan Ford had three goals in the win including one in the final frame Waterdown’s Cole Stevens had two in the loss for Waterdown.

Annie Nguyen, known by her teammates and coaches as “Annie Bananie”, has been a cornerstone in athletics throughout her tenure at MacNab. She has been a contributing member of both the basketball and volleyball teams for the past four years but demonstrates an aptitude for many team sports. She is incredibly hard working and extremely coachable. Annie has risen to the occasion when called upon by her coaches and her assets of leadership and sportsmanship make her contributions to the teams she is a part of invaluable. She is extremely well-liked by her teammates and her smile and positive attitude are infectious. Annie will certainly be missed around the gym at MacNab next year but we wish her luck as she heads off to Queens University.

Abigail VandenBrink is a grade 12 student at HDCH and she has been a big contributor to the Athletics program at HDCH. Every year since grade 9, from September to June, Abigail has been a part of our basketball, volleyball, and soccer teams; she even dabbled in a little badminton. Abigail’s intensity and desire in practice and in games is infectious: she is a positive catalyst for her teammates. Abigail wants to win and she is determined to work as hard as possible to make that happen. She also knows what it takes to succeed. Abigail shows a commitment to her team and to her teammates, modelling the importance of showing up to every game, meeting, and practice: coaches and teammates will see Abigail working hard from start to finish. If communication isn’t happening on the field or the court, the team can count on Abigail to get it going. As the years have passed, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to see Abigail develop her skills and tactics, growing in her ability to make important contributions to the success of her teams. We thank Abigail for her work, and wish her all the best as she heads into post secondary education in September!

Isaac Martins has been a huge part of the Sir Allan MacNab athletics family for the last 5 years. Isaac is a multi-sport athlete who has been named captain of the varsity soccer team this season. He has been a starting setter each of his years on the volleyball team and has also captained that group.  Isaac and his team are really looking forward to making a splash in the outdoor soccer season this spring.

When at school Isaac is a wonderful example for our younger student-athletes. He is always very respectful, he works extremely hard in his classes and is always willing to spend the extra time to help out around the gym. He is a role model for younger students and makes a positive impact on our school climate. Isaac embodies what it means to be a true student-athlete and a MacNab Lion.

ELEMENTARY ATHLETICS

Basketball (Girls / Boys)

Olivia is a Grade 10 student who is a key member of OP’s emerging Wrestling Team. Olivia used her karate background as a foundation for Wrestling, which she started in Grade 8. Since then she has been incredibly dedicated and disciplined in her training and has excelled in the sport. She placed 7th at OFSAA last year, while competing against athletes who were much older and experienced. Olivia loves wrestling because she finds the community is very accepting. She is an extremely positive role model for her teammates. She consistently works to the best of her ability at every practice and encourages others to do the same. She uses her background to help others learn technique, is a leader on and off the mat and communicates effectively with her coaches and teammates. Olivia enjoys the challenge of running Cross-Country before the Wrestling season starts, as it allows her to develop a strong cardio base.

Olivia hopes to combine wrestling in some capacity with her Post-Secondary pursuits.
